Worship Gathering: Acts One - Stephen

Acts One - Stephen

Acts 6:8-8:3

Even though Stephen is remembered as "the first martyr" the truth is, many had been "martyrs" during the last few centuries of Jewish history before the time of Jesus. The extraordinary thing is that Stephen's final words are so different from those of his ancestors.

Join us this Sunday morning for a time of worship, singing, and sharing as we reflect on the fact that the first Christian martyr called down blessing and forgiveness on his torturers and executioners.

Acts One - Leadership Problems

Acts 6:1-7

How do you grow a church: preaching, teaching and prayer or acts of service?

Trick question. No one "is growing the church"; God is growing the church and using various ministries and servants to do so.

Join us this Sunday morning for a time of worship, singing, and sharing as we receive encouragement for our 21st-century community from the 1st-century community.

Worship Gathering: Acts One - Causality

Acts One - Causality

Acts 5:34-42

Anyone who has taken an intro to psych or a statistics class has heard the old adage, "correlation does not imply causation.“ Just because two trends seem to fluctuate in tandem, this rule posits, that doesn’t prove that they are meaningfully related to one another. While that sounds nice enough on paper, it’s easy to forget when provocative headlines and narratives woo us with a scenario we wish to be true or false.

Join us this Sunday morning for a time of worship, singing, and sharing as we reflect on life following after God through the good times and the bad.

Worship Gathering: Navigating Challenges -- Heritage and Hope -- with a Tricycle

Guest: Dr. Jon Isaak (Director, Centre For MB Studies)

On top of being one of Justin's favorite professors, Jon provides leadership to the work of the Centre for Mennonite Brethren Studies which involves preserving Mennonite Brethren congregational and conference records, including theological writings.

Jon also published New Testament Theology: Extending The Table

Romans 14.1-12

Jon has found the tricycle method of faith (borrowed from Richard Rohr) to be helpful when navigating pressing social challenges, like the theological questions that occupy our attention, or like the social and environmental challenges we face in our globalized and digital world, or the tension between affirming Mennonite heritage and longing for hope to enliven the church in new ways.

Worship Gathering: Acts One - A Whole New Reality

Acts One - A Whole New Reality

Acts 5:12-16

Much of this text is hard to fathom, there is always a strange unknown quality about God's healing. What is evident from this text is that people were excited about the establishment of a new reality in a dangerous place: the power of the living God becoming concrete, definite, undeniable, not simply a matter of a few people telling a very strange story.

Join us this Sunday morning for a time of worship, singing, and sharing as we remember that it is when the church, through prayer and wisdom, acts with decisive power in the real world -- to build and run a successful school, or medical clinic; to free slaves or remit debts; to establish a housing project -- that people will take the message of Jesus seriously.

Acts One - Lord's Name in Vain

Acts 5:1-11

We can not have a conversation about the Lord's name (last week) without talking about using the Lord's Name in Vain (this week).

Join us this Sunday morning for a time of worship, singing, and sharing as we face the reality that those who serve under the Lord's name are not permitted to abuse the holiness of God by attempting to put a leash on God, then drag God into our projects, vanity, crusades, and cruelties.

Acts One - Lord's Name

Acts 4:1-31

The name of the Lord is a powerful thing; it makes the lame walk. Where God's power is at work to bring real change, real healing, real new life, there the people who are naming the name of Jesus to bring it about can stand up before anyone.

Join us this Sunday morning for a time of worship, singing, and sharing as look at this story and these words from Paul: "the kingdom of God is not about talk, but about power" (1 Corinthians 4:20)

Acts 2:42-47

Whenever we feel -- as individuals or as a community -- stagnant, unattractive, and humdrum it's time to read Acts 2:42-47 again, get down on our knees, and ask what isn't happening that should be happening.

Casting Lots with Scottish Widows

Acts 1:12-26

Sometime around 40-50 A.D.E. a group of Jesus followers needed to replace one of their Apostles. In 1744, two Presbyterian clergymen in Scotland, Alexander Webster and Robert Wallace, wanted to set up a life-insurance fund. What do the two stories have in common? The outcomes were not going to happen on their own.

Join us this Sunday morning for a time of worship, singing, and sharing as we discuss taking responsibility for our futures.

Preacher: 4

Justin Majeau

1 Kings 3:3-14

Assuming that King Solomon is the preacher characterized in the text of Ecclesiastes, when we read this enigmatic text we are, at least ostensibly, reading the words of one of Israel’s most knowledgeable kings. Yet according to Ecclesiastes 1:18, it would seem that Solomon’s greatest blessing also became his greatest burden.

Join us this Sunday morning for a time of worship, singing, communion, and sharing as we discuss the problem of knowledge and self-discovery.

Worship Gathering: Preacher 3

Preacher: 3

Justin Majeau

Matthew 25:31-46

Have you heard the saying; “Christianity isn’t a religion it is a relationship”? How about this one; “The Church is the hands and feet of God”? Helpful sayings for some. But what if the idea of relationships frighten you? What if the idea of reducing an infinite God into a manageable, “relatable” concept offends your senses? What if those “hands and feet” abused you? Then what do you do?

This Sunday through the special use of a “generic” descriptor of God found throughout the book of Ecclesiastes we will see that maybe God if far more infinite than we have been lead to believe but also even more immanent than we could ever imagine.

Join us this Sunday morning for a time of worship, singing, communion, and sharing as we discuss the realities of our rich and diverse community.

Are you stressed, worried, overworked? Are you trying to work yourself to a place of contentment? If so, how is that working for you?

Life is a precious — all be it an evaporating — gift.

This Sunday, via the book of Ecclesiastes, we will celebrate that truth.

Join us this Sunday morning as we look at themes of meaning, significance, and the beauty of life through singing, reflection, and study.

Worship Gathering: Preacher 1

Preacher: 1

Justin Majeau

Ecclesiastes 1, Zechariah 8:16-17, John 8:31-36

In Shakespeare’s King Lear, in the last act, the good and the bad, the wise and the fool, the weak and the strong, all die alike and as Edgar comes to pull the curtain down what he says is this:

“The weight of this sad time we must obey

Speak what we feel, not what we ought to say.”

The preacher in Ecclesiastes needed no such advice, for he spoke exactly what he felt and not what others expected him to say and for that in our coming series we can all breathe a sigh of relief.

Join us this Sunday morning for a time of worship, singing, communion, and sharing as we discuss the joy found in freedom and honesty.

Operation Christmas Child Pack Day

It's that time of year again for the Operation Christmas Child! We have changed how we organize this event this year. In an attempt to make your busy lives easier and to pack the boxes with the most requested items, we will be asking for monetary donations and we will do the shopping for the boxes. We have been advised of certain gifts that all of the children love such as soccer balls. In order to buy quality soccer balls and other supplies, we will be packing fewer boxes, but will know that we have packed them with the most needed items. We will be packing on Sunday, November 6 after the service, followed by taco in a bag lunch. A lunch sign up list is posted in the foyer.

Adult Education Session

Israel's Mission: Part 4

God chose Israel to be His people and commissioned them to be a kingdom of priests who would demonstrate His character by how they lived in the world. In that same commission, God commanded His people to be obedient and holy; worship Him alone; and care for widows, orphans, and strangers. By doing so, they would fulfill God's promise that all nations would be blessed through the descendants of Abraham.

It wouldn't be easy to avoid the influence of foreign destructive practices and beliefs while at the same time interacting with those heavy involved in those practices and beliefs. God's people often grew complacent, corrupt, and fell prey to these destructive practices. On the other hand, some of the people who heard Jesus' teachings were likely quite insulated from the world around them. The question we will wrestle with during this session is, where on the spectrum do we all, and how do we get to where God would have us be?
