Navigating Challenges--Heritage and Hope--with a Tricycle

Jon has found the tricycle method of faith (borrowed from Richard Rohr) to be helpful when navigating pressing social challenges, like the theological questions that occupy our attention, or like the social and environmental challenges we face in our globalized and digital world, or the tension between affirming Mennonite heritage and longing for hope to enliven the church in new ways.

Ezra-Nehemiah: Part 5 - Entertainment

Entertainment can return us to our lives, our jobs, friends and families, energized and renewed. Our everyday lives can be refreshed and energized by entertainment. However, many social critiques from the past 50 years have warned us that we may be in danger of "entertaining ourselves to death." The ethos of entertainment (i.e. what can I get out of this activity) subtly creeps into our faith and worship.

Ezra-Nehemiah: Part 4 - Sovereignty

“Everything does happen for a reason” and the reason is: there are consequence to our actions and the actions of others. To abdicate that truth and write every act or outcome off on God pulling some divine strings — in my opinion — is immature and intellectually indefensible.

However; to believe that God can take anything that happens in this world and in our lives, and eventually -- in some mysterious way redeem it; make something beautiful out of it-- in some way bring about His will and desire; that type of belief takes a very mature and strong faith.

Ezra-Nehemiah: Part 3 - Buildings

The earliest Christ-followers came to realize that they didn't need escape their "secular" surroundings into "sacred" buildings or special places to meet with God. They saw themselves as living stones, who were being built together into a new living temple, made up of people of God. They believed that their entire lives were altars upon which to offer sacrificial love to God and others . Because of Jesus, they understood that all of life is holy and every relationship sacred.

Truly, there is no holier ground than the space between you and me as we connect in honest, vulnerable, forgiving relationships.

Ezra-Nehemiah: Part 2 - Exile

The essential meaning of exile is that we are where we don’t want to be, with people we don't like, and in circumstances we would rather not have. We are separated from home. It is an experience of dislocation — everything is out of joint; nothing fits together. Life is ripped out of familiar soil and rudely and unceremoniously dropped into some unfamiliar place.

It isn’t home.

But this very strangeness can open up new reality to us. An accident, a tragedy, a disaster of any kind can force the realization that the world is not predictable, that reality is far more extensive than our partial perception of it. With the pain and in the midst of alienation a sense of freedom can occur.

Ezra-Nehemiah: Part 1 - The Road to Exile

Wade Wilson once said: "when life ends up breathtakingly [messed], you can generally trace it back to one big, bad decision. The one that sent you down the road to [pitts]burg." In the case of Ancient Israel; it was a series of several "big, bad decision{s}" that sent them into exile. In preparing for the book of Ezra-Nehemiah, we take a look at how this nation found themselves in need of redemption.

Revelation: The Beginning, The End, and Everything In Between

Have you ever wondered why we are here?  Questioned whether or not our lives really matter. I want to believe that everything I think, everything I say, and everything I do matters. I don't want to just sit back and wait for something to happen or someday to come. I want to know that all the choices I make now will shape my world and lives for eternity. Revelation helps me come to that understanding.

Revelation 2:18-29, 1 King 18:20-40

John explicitly cast the New Testament Nicolaitans as the Old Testament Balaam and Jezebel.

Who then -- from the Old Testament -- could John be implicitly casting the motley crew of trades workers, farmers, cloth makers, grandparents, parents, brothers and sisters that made up the first century church in Thyatira, Asia Minor? The 21st century church in Selkirk, Manitoba? The answer is easy. The implications profound.

Nero? Domitian? Hitler? United Nations? Microchips? President Obama? Donald Trump? Are these the things that St. John was trying to prepare us for with his cryptic 666? I doubt it. This Sunday we take a look at the structure of the book of Revelation and see why that may matter. Long before Michael Lewis, Billy Beane and Brad Pitt brought us MoneyBall St. John was helping us to understand the world in which we found ourselves in through the use of numbers.

The Persistent  (Matthew 11:1-3; Luke 18:1-8)

January 24, 2016/Justin Majeau

Maybe the most remarkable thing about followers of Jesus is not that there are so many but that some keep at it.  Because some don't. Some flat out -- with the realities of wars, disease, blind not being given sight, leprosy not being cured, aluminum walkers not being traded in, good news not being preached -- walk away.

And yet some persist.

Why?

Well, as is often the case with Jesus, we don't get a straight answer from Him; we get a story, we get a parable.
